Today is actually the SECOND time I have watched this video.
The first time I watched the interview that was shot 3 weeks ago was yesterday. This is what I had to say:
“Seeing it today made me a little sad, and I will tell you why. Normally I am pretty happy and sunny in disposition. When I watched myself today, I saw the strain that living with Pancreatic cancer for 4 years has had on me.
I see it on my furrowed brow, in my eyes, and the seriousness on my face. I am sad that I still carry this burden in my body, though my spirit is quite robust.
Yes, cancer is a heavy journey, filled with so many ups and downs, fears and unknowns. People who have not had cancer can’t quite understand its impact on the body, mind, emotions and spirit.”
Today I watched the video through a different lens. I just watched the woman and listened to what she had to say. As she/I talked, I saw that 4 years of living with Pancreatic cancer hadn’t diminished who she was as a person. Not in the least! She had plenty of challenges with the cancer, the various forms of treatment, the emotional upheaval when it metastasized to her liver, her frustration when she discovered the need for Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy, but she just kept moving forward, advocating for herself, and never losing her belief in God and her body’s ability to heal itself.
The ESSENCE OF WHO SHE IS AS A PERSON never changed!
I found myself loving and admiring her. It was a very healing experience for me.
And that is the message I want to share with cancer patients and their families all around the world:
NEVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF.
EMPOWER YOUR BODY, MIND, EMOTIONS, SPIRIT in your battle with cancer.
LOVE AND HONOR EVERY PART OF YOURSELF during your journey with cancer, even when the treatments take their toll, recurrences may happen, unexpected challenges come your way.
YOU HAVE MORE PERSONAL POWER than you ever imagined. Dig deep and actualize it.
It has been a blessing for me to share my experiences with Mark – whom I consider my “twin brother.” Despite his Stage 4 Prostate cancer which has metastasized to his lung and bones, HE NEVER GAVE UP on himself and his desire to live. We are both WARRIORS who love helping other cancer patients have better treatment outcomes.
