A Very Important Day For Me

When I was first told by my Radiation Oncologist that he ordered 10 consecutive business days of radiation to my umbilicus, I thought it was a grim, impossible task.

In five years as a Pancreatic cancer patient, I never had radiation. This was an unknown treatment, and I knew nothing about it:

What would it be like?

Would it hurt?

Would it damage my body?

The long commute from Santa Monica seemed daunting, nearly impossible.

My experience with 10 targeted radiation treatments on my umbilicus was nothing short of great! First, they do a CT scan of the area, then there is a “mapping” session where they line your body up, run the CT imagery, then draw a circle around the area on your body, and insert a shield in the lens of the machine, to restrict the beam to target just that exact area. That becomes the template for all 10 sessions.

I did not experience any pain or burning during any of the sessions. After each treatment, the radiation techs put a protective pad with easy-to-remove tape to the area.

I prayed throughout each 5-minute session and felt totally calm – knowing that they were killing the cancer.

The end result? My umbilicus in now normal size and a more normal color. The area around it is now flat. I did have some soreness and tenderness in the target area, but 5 days after the end of treatments, it is feeling much better and the whole abdominal cavity if ready for exercise and deep abdominal breathing and exhales.

I think targeted radiation is a great treatment option for cancer patients!

The biggest obstacle to this treatment is FEAR – which you must acknowledge and work through, sharing your feelings with your Self and your trusted Loved Ones. Prayer is also immensely helpful.

Once again, God is great and safely ushered us through, with a wonderful supportive team at City of Hope Lennar Cancer Center in Irvine, California.
