Chemo induced Hand/Foot Syndrome is a painful, frightening side effect of chemotherapy.

Experiencing it myself has motivated me to develop a protocol for healing it. It usually appears several days after an infusion or taking the “at home” chemotherapy pill Xeloda (5 FU).

It can catch you by surprise, as it did to me, and feels overwhelming and alarming. I don’t think Oncologists really know what to do about it, nor the hands-on NP’s. All they tell you is that it is a probable side effect.

Here is the protocol I have developed:

Step 1: Take a very warm/hot bath for 1 hour using Epsom Salts and Bend Company’s Oatmeal/Honey/Goat Milk Bath. It takes this long to slowly soften the calloused loose skin. Over that time period, put your feet in and out of the water while you relax into the contours of your bathtub. This time is soothing for body, mind, emotions and spirit.

When you get out of the tub, gently pat your hands and feet dry, while also gently massaging the loose skin in small circles. What happens is that the skin will slowly fall off or allow you to gently peel it away. If it does not fall off, then go to Step 2.

Step 2: Apply Bag Balm ointment to the soles and sides of your feet and then slip them into soft socks – which will absorb the extra ointment. Bag Balm is available on Amazon in a nice 3-tin pack.

Step 3: Slip your feet into Natracure Cold Therapy Socks that are kept in your freezer. These are also available on Amazon. They run small, so order a size larger. Wear them when you rest and also all night. They also have Cold Therapy Gloves for your hands.

Soon you will find your new pink skin emerging on your hands and feet.

I follow this protocol every day and this prevents the buildup of thick calloused, red and painful hands and feet.

I hope you find this helpful.
